The sixth time was a charm for Sean Hoesing, who turned an unplanned last-minute entry on the final starting flight of the November 2024 Bally’s Black Hawk November 2024 CPC $1,200 Main Event into $64,954 and the first tournament win of his poker career with a buy-in over $1,000.
Hoesing told friends that he planned to five a maximum of five bullets into the event over its three starting flights. However, he had a chance at the CPC points race and went for a sixth and final shot.
“That’s how they get you,” he said after the tournament. He later added that it still hadn’t sunk in.
Hoesing was one of the final players to join the 307-entry field, which generated a prize pool of $313,910. On his final shot, he built up a stack and proceeded to win a massive coin flip against his self-proclaimed nemesis, Antonio Vargas, in the later stages of Day 1.
The ascent continued, and Hoesing bagged the chip lead on Day 1 — both of his flight and the overall tournament. He said that this was “just his tournament”: today went just as smoothly as yesterday did for the most part, and he was fortunate to make the most of it.
That said, Hoesing had three massively defining moments that all came from extremely tough calls. One came on Day 1C, which helped propel him to the chip lead, and two more on Day 2.
In the first of those two, he won a pot for roughly one-sixth of the chips in play with 19 players remaining at the time. He called a four-bet and barrels on all three streets with pocket kings on a paired board, and he won against pocket jacks. Then, he made a similar call with pocket eights on the final table with two overcards on board and picked off a bluff.
Hoesing had the chip lead for most of Day 2. Ronnie “Lawn Chair” Ung took a slice of it at the final table, which he claimed as a result of two massive hands in a 15-minute span. Both hands saw him win with pocket aces against ace-king, helping to propel him to a second-place finish.
Other final table participants included local dealer Rob Schoder, HPT Black Hawk September 2019 champion Jay McVeigh, and Vincent Moscati, who has the fourth-most winnings in Bally’s Black Hawk history ($528,521 plus today’s score, listed below).
Final Table Results:
- 1. Sean Hoesing – $64,594
