John Nethery had moved to one of the room’s top stacks in the Ante Up Reno Main Event late in Day 1A, sitting at about 300,000 as play neared its end. A matchup against John Miner shot Nethery’s stack to the stratosphere.
Nethery picked up Kings, Miner shoved with Queens, Nethery held and bagged a 600,000 stack to lead everyone in to today’s Day 2 Final. That lead vanished after just a few hands, one he regained 3-handed and held until the end as he is the 2019 Ante Up Reno Champion.
He defeated Rian Mullins heads-up to earn the $47,902 first place prize, the Ante Up Trophy and an entry in the 2020 Ante Up World Championship at TVPokerRoom at Thunder Valley.
“I am on top of the world, I came up to win it,” said Nethery, who added he tried satellites to win an $1,100 Main Event seat but didn’t have any luck. “I won an entry on the craps table late Friday night and everything went up since there.”
The final table featured a number of local players, including four-time WSOP bracelet winner Loren Klein. It was Klein who took the chiplead early today and kept it to the final table. Klein kept the pressure on at the final table, eventually finishing 6th.
Ryan Awwad has been on a heater of late, including a 3rd at MSPT Michigan in May for $120k. He finished 5th, earning $12,000.
Valerie Hanley was sharing the chiplead with Klein much of Day 2, building a big lead at the final table once Klein was eliminated. She ended up doubling Mullins twice and Nethery once before bowing out in 3rd place for a $21,580 cash.
