Aaron Overton was crowned the champion of the $1,100 buy-in RunGood Poker Series Main Event hosted at Graton Casino’s Poker Room on March 15, and his run through a field of 578 entries earned him $94,050, taking his career earnings to more than $1.6 million. We caught up with Overton after his most recent win, and here is what the Philadelphia native who has lived in Northern California the last seven years had to say.
Poker Live Updates: Take us through how you’re feeling right now with the win?
Overton: Yeah, it feels great to win a live tournament. The ring is super cool looking. It was a tough final table especially three handed I was playing against two really good players including a good friend of mine who I play against once a week.I had to cooler the hell out of him to win the tournament, and Brett [Murray] is a great player too.
PLU: Let’s rewind to four handed. Obviously there was the hand where you had the pocket threes and spiked that three on the river to make a comeback late. What was your thought process in that moment and how that process went from going to the bottom of the standings to taking it all the way down?
Overton: I wanted to play for the win. The threes are probably a fold normally, but I felt like gambling a little bit more for a win in that scenario. That was a big turning point when I flopped the flush draw and he flopped the pair, and I got lucky and hit.
PLU: You’re originally from Philly but you have a lot of results in this region at various events. What do you like about the poker tournaments up here?
Overton: I’ve lived in Sacramento for seven years now. It’s really chill, there’s a good community of people that live in Northern California, the poker community is a lot kinder than what I was used to growing up with in Philadelphia and the Northeast. You know, that Northeast weather energy. It’s really refreshing to be around people that are just kind at the table.
PLU: And diving a little deeper into that community up here what do you like specifically about Graton and the tournaments they run here?
Overton: This is a smoke-free space so that means a lot to me. I won’t play tournaments where you’re sitting in smoke anymore, it’s not just worth it for me.
PLU: We all just saw your journey at the final table, but what was the overall journey through the tournament like for you?
Overton: I was just taking it one hand at a time, take some spots and go with my reads. I got some good spots as well. I felt like I played really well overall.
