A rather surreal last 18 hours wrapped up Friday morning as the final 10 players in the $5,000 Bay 101 Shooting Star agreed to an ICM chop, bringing the tournament to a close with Craig Varnell claiming the title.
Thursday’s Day 2 play began with Darren Elias as the short stack, doubling and doubling and doubling yet again as the early story, but the COVID-19 growing concerns took highlight as day grew late.
Play was shortened from 90-minute levels at 36 players to 60 minutes throughout to trim a day from play, and two additional levels added to help bring the event closer to its conclusion. With 10 levels complete, 10 players remained and ICM numbers were provided should Bay 101 not be allowed to open Friday for Day 3.
Players considered the numbers and opted to return Friday, but after 10-15 minutes of discussion, the chop was agreed to any the players were on their way home.
Varnell ($159,710) took top honors with the top stack, followed by GPI’s No. 1-ranked female player, Kristen Bicknell ($141,520).
