Jamul Poker Room

Ante Up Poker Tour - Jamul San Diego

Our friends at Jamul Poker Room at Jamul Casino in San Diego – the region’s newest poker option – are temporarily closed as part of the state of California’s COVID-19 response.

The poker room at the closest casino to San Diego is operated by John Rochfort, who was part of the team to help establish TVPokerRoom at Thunder Valley Resort outside Sacramento.

We look forward to bringing more updates and activities from Jamul once businesses can reopen.

Casinos, Cardrooms Starting to Reopen

Poker

Casinos, poker rooms and cardrooms across the US are beginning to reopen as state-by-state quarantine restrictions begin easing. California has a series of cardroom-only ‘casinos,’ and one 6-poker-table room re-opened today.

Towers Casino in Grass Valley, according to staff there and the cardroom’s website, has three of its six tables in use. Staff stated today full 9-handed cash games are available, with no tournaments scheduled at this time. Staff stated they are using state-recommended cleaning procedures.

“Staff members will be wearing face masks or shields. Patrons will be required to wear face masks,” the cardroom’s website states.

Jamul Casino San Diego has a ‘soft-open’ for the next three days. Only its top-tier customers are in, with the full casino open 24/7 starting on Thursday. The poker room opens for business on Thursday, according to Poker Room Manager John Rochfort.

Those are the only two California poker rooms opening this week – that we know of right now.

One South Dakota poker room and one in Texas is already open, both playing with limited-numbers of players and limited tables as well.

Seminole Hard Rock Tampa in Florida is posted on its website as re-opening this Thursday. There is no specific mention of the poker room in the website notification.

Ante Up Magazine has a running list of all U.S. poker rooms and their current status listed, the list updated as information is provided.

Two Fast Eliminations

Yary Hing - Jamul San Diego Poker Room

Yary Hing eliminates both Ralph Mittman in 6th place and Najib Kero in 5th place in consecutive hands to send the Ante Up Jamul San Diego Main Event down to its final four participants.

Kero earns $4,736 for his 5th-place finish, while Mittman – whose Ace_Jack ran in to the Aces of Hing – takes home $3,924.

The final four players start to check ICM numbers, then decide to get cards back in the air without looking to see what chip-based payouts would be.

A San-Diego-Special

Jamul San Diego Poker Room

Action folds around to the blinds, and Yary Hing makes it 5x + from the SB – 160,000. Scott Lewis then moves all in from the BB and Hing snap-calls.

  • Ace_Eight for Hing
  • Ace_Five for Lewis

The board goes 9 – 4 – K – T – T and the players chop.

I can’t tell you how many times this week I saw a player move all-in with Ace_Eight, apparently it is the San Diego Special.

Smith Doubles Through Kero

Chris Smith - Jamul San Diego Poker Room

LEVEL 22 —- ANTE 30K —– BLINDS 15K-30K —– REMAIN 6/171

Christopher Smith opens for 65,000 and action folds to Najib Kero in the BB, who asks for the bet amount, and then makes the call.

Both players check the 7c – 9s – 6s action flop, with Kero leading out for 150,000 on the 7s more-action turn. Smith doesn’t waste much time in making the call.

6h comes on the even-more-action river, and Smith moves all in for his last 385,000. Kero asks for a count, asks for a count a second time, asks the pot be spread, gets clock called on him and then makes the call for half of his stack.

Smith shows 8h- 7h for a flopped middle pair and open-ended draw that turned trips and rivered a boat.

Kero shows 4s -5s for a flopped open-ended straight draw and a flush draw and completed the flush on the turn and was also an open-ended straight flush draw that was beaten on the river.

Smith to 1.2 million, Kero to 385,000, 6-handed play continues in the main event.

7th for Lebhar

David Lebhar - Jamul San Diego Poker Room

David Lebhar gets the last of his chips in the middle from the SB and runs in to start-of-day chipleader Scott Lewis in the BB, who makes the call to put Lebhar at risk, 7-handed in the Ante Up Jamil San Diego Main Event.

  • Six_Three for Lebhar
  • Nines for Lewis

The runout goes J – A – Q – J – 2 and Lebhar is eliminated in 7th place, cashing for $3,393.

Deven Ware (8th, $2,969) and Alex Atta (9th, $2,553) were earlier final table eliminations.

Smith Soars to Chiplead

Christopher Smith - Jamul San Diego Poker Room

LEVEL 20 —- ANTE 20k —– BLINDS 10k/20k —- REMAIN 11/171

A few hands after taking most of Tailong Qiao’s stack, Event 1 winner Christopher Smith calls TQ’s all in for 140,000, the last 7BB for TQ..

  • Ace_Ten for Qiao
  • Nine_Seven for Smith

Smith is OK with the 8 – 5 – J flop giving him a gutter to a straight. The 4 turn doesn’t change anything, but Smith doesn’t need the straight, catching a river 9 FTW to move to 1.35 million chips and a massive chiplead.

Qiao is out in 12th place, earning $2,203 and 17 Player of the Series points to move to 10th on the leaderboard with the final two tournaments ($240 with $100 Bounty and $100 Series Finale) taking place today.

Lewis Eliminates Bradford on Bubble

Scott Lewis - Jamul San Diego Poker Room

The second hand of Bubble Play finds an all in over at Table 1, so let’s wander over and check out what is going on.

Start-of-day chipleader Scott Lewis opened and Omaha8 winner Eric Bradford has moves in for his last 78,000. Lewis verifies the count and makes the call.

  • King_Queen – the Fred-Bevill Mom-and-Dad hand
  • Ace_Seven (spades) for Lewis

Lewis grabs a bigger lead right away with an Ace in the window, followed by 6 – 2. The turn King gives Bradford 5 outs but the river 5 sends Bradford out in 23rd place, missing the money by one position.

Massive Pot Eliminates Margers

Yary Hing - Jamul San Diego Poker Room

Tavish Margers opened and say Yary Hing bump it to 50,000. That piqued the interest of the current leader in the Player of the Series race, so Margers moved all in for 320,000 and was stunned when Hing snap-called off his 307,000 stack.

  • Ace_King for Margers and the outlook is not great
  • Aces for Hing

The 6 – J – J flop gives Hing two pair, but the turn Queen gives Margers a gutter to a Ten for Broadway.

River is a 3 and Hing moves way up and above the previous top-stack in the room, now at 625,000.

Margers is left with 13,000, moved all in the next hand, runs in to trips and is eliminated 6 from the money, opening back up the Player of the Series race to others chasing him today.

“I thought he was just making a move,” said Margers.

Smith Eliminates Azam

Chris Smith - Jamul San Diego Poker Room

Event 1 winner Chris Smith opens for 16,000, action folds around to Rafi Azam on the button and he moves all in. The BB gets out of the way and Smith snap-calls to put Azam at risk.

  • King_Ten for Azam and he needs major help.
  • Aces for Smith

The board runs 3 – 7 – 9 – 4 – 8 and Azam is out 10 from the money in Day 2 of the Ante Up Jamul San Diego Main Event.

3 More Hands

JohnQTD has paused the tournament play clock at 10 minutes and announced there’s three more hands until the Bag-n-Tag portion of Day 1B takes place in the $550 ante Up Jamul San Diego Main Event.

We’ll return in 25 minutes with final Day 1B chipcounts, and 25 minutes after that with the Day 2 Seat Assignments.

Podnieks Misses Out on Day 2

Eric Podnieks - Jamul San Diego Poker Room

Eric Podnieks opens, had the 1-seat at his table move in, and Podnieks thinks for a minute before deciding to call off his stack.

  • Ace_Ten (spades) for Podnieks
  • Ace_Queen (h/d) for his challenger.

Podnieks calls for a Ten, then his tablemates suggest he now call for a Queen when the flop comes K – J- x

Blank, blank goes the runout and Podnieks misses bagging a Day 2 Stack by 14 minutes.

Not This Time for Sharifi

Jamul San Diego Poker Room

Saum Sharifi jammed a 33,500 stack earlier because he didn’t want to bag a small Day 1B Main Event stack. He doubled with 56dd to get to 70,000.

Now with that 70k stack, he jams again in a blind-vs-blind clash and runs smack in to a bigger-stacked BB’s Aces with his Jack_Seven offsuit.

T-J-T goes the flop to give him a sweat, the Ten turn giving both players a boat and a river blank sinks Sharifi’s boat 35 minutes away from bagging a Day 2 stacks.

Margers Marches to Top

Tavish Margers - Jamul San Diego Poker Room

Tavish Margers is familiar with leading during this Ante Up Jamul San Diego Series.

He won Event 5, the $10,000 Guaranteed $160 Deepstack, and is currently No. 1 on the Player of the Series Leaderboard.

Now he’s the top stack with 36 players remaining in Day 1B of the $550 Main Event, sitting at 275,000 with one hour remaining in Day 1B play.

Competition tonight continues until about 7:40pm when Level 14 ends. All players with chips after 14 Levels qualify to return Sunday at Noon for the Day 2 Final restart, playing down to a winner.

Sharifi’s Gambol Pays Off

Jamul San Diego Poker Room

There’s an open to 8,000, then Saum Sharifi bumps it ~4x to 33,500 all-in. Action folds around to the original raiser, who asks for a count, then puts Sharifi at risk in Day 1B of the Ante Up Jamul San Diego $550 Main Vvent.

  • Sharifi turns up Five_Six (diamonds)
  • His challenger shows King_Jack (diamonds, also)

Sharifi takes the lead on the 5s – 8d – 7h flop, falling behind once again on the Jc turn, but getting there for a straight with the river 9d.

Chirp-like table banter follows, Sharifi talking about how he didn’t want to move forward a 30k stack on to Sunday, his challenger implying 56dd was a less-than-stellar hand to attempt a double with.

Carlton Eliminates Fortuno on Reg Break

Jamul San Diego Poker Room

LEVEL 9 —- ANTE 1000 —- BLINDS 500/1000 —- ENTRIES – 110

The final hand before registration break finds Anthony Carlton facing an all-in bet from Robert Fortuno, and it is for most of Carlton’s stack.

He finds the call and also finds he’s in a good place.

  • Queens for Carlton
  • Queen_Nine (hearts) for Fortuno

The 5-2-2-T-3 runout eliminates Fortuno, and he says he’s OK with that, for he has the 15-minute registration break to fins a new 30,000 stack in exchange for a $550 buy-in.

Eric Podnieks is one of the more than 40 players who won their way in to the $100,000 Guaranteed Ante Up Jamul San Diego $550 Main Event in a $70 or $125 satellite.

Here with that satellite entry in play, Podnieks has worked his way up to 52,000 as he opens a pot for 2,500 and draws a call from only the BB.

Both players check the Tc – 7d – 8c flop, then Podnieks calls a 3,000 bet from the BB on the 6h turn, but can’t find a call when the 5c river comes, putting a world of potential big hands out there.
